Our local no-kill animal shelters provide a often overlooked service to our neighborhoods and communities where we live, learn, work and play. That why we want to give a few of our local no-shelters a shout out for their outstanding work: Humane Society of Tulsa, Route 66 Pet Rescue, Tulsa SPCA. Support these groups by volunteering, follwoing them on social media, share their posts, and ADOPT!

Humane Society of Tulsa

The Humane Society of Tulsa does amazing work rescuing pets from all kinds of situations. They have cats and dogs that can be adopted to “furever” homes! Did you know that the Humane Society of Tulsa also does rescue work during disasters and emergency situations? They offer sheltering, veterinary services, and victim support in times of need.

Another key aspect of their work is responding to large scale rescues like hoarding, commercial breeder closings, and closures of other shelters. They rely heavily on adoptions and part of their mission is to spread the word and educate people on the choices available. Helping others learn to adopt instead of shop for pets is key to ending the overcrowding issues in shelters across the country!

Route 66 Pet Rescue

Another no kill shelter that is doing amazing work in Tulsa is the Route 66 Pet Rescue. They had more than 100 dogs adopted during 2016 and those numbers continue to grow! Part of being a no-kill shelter means that they rely on people coming in to adopt puppies and dogs instead of buying them from breeders. You can help their core mission just by adopting instead of shopping for your next pet.

The great thing about Route 66 Pet Rescue is that they do events! Their next one is at PetSmart where they’ll have ALL of their puppies and dogs available for you to see, meet, and potentially adopt! They require an application process, references, a home visit, and some other things before you can adopt. While this might seem tedious it’s actually to be sure that every pet will be placed in an amazing home where they can live happy, healthy lives. Considering how some of these animals end up in shelters to begin with, the process is more than worth it!

Tulsa SPCA

The Tulsa SPCA is the last (but not least) no kill shelter here in Tulsa that we’re going to talk about. They are amazing at what they do and they offer a lot of special programs. They do school visits, surrenders, cruelty investigations, low cost vet clinic services, and more.

The Tulsa SPCA also has a lot of fun events that they use to raise awareness about adoptions for their dogs and cats as well as fundraisers to help further that mission. Check out their website, linked above, for more details on how you can help!
