What began as peaceful protests and movements became one of the most celebrated secular holidays in the world. More than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day celebrations each year.

What is the historical significance of Earth Day?

In the past, Earth Day has focused on threats to the environment ranging from oil, fossil fuels, recycling, and more. Earth Day 2016 was historical because the US, China and 190 other countries signed the Paris Agreement which was part of the United Nations Climate Change Conference!

In 2000 Earth Day used the internet as its main mode of organization for the very first time! In 1990 Earth Day was a starting point for our modern day recycling goals. Earth Day has a rich history of launching the excitement and activism necessary to get grassroots movements for earth protections.
